Dear all,

I would like to propose two new standard names for marine ecosystem components.

(1) mass_concentration_of_diazotrophs_expressed_as_carbon_in_sea_water
(2) mass_concentration_of_zooplankton_expressed_as_carbon_in_sea_water

I both cases a standard name already exists, but expressed as ?mole_concentration? rather than ?mass_concentration?. However for other ecosystem components like diatoms and flagellates a standard name mass_concentration_of_*_expressed_as_carbon_in_sea_water already exists. Hence I would like to suggest corresponding standard names in mass concentration for diazotrophs and zooplankton.

Full standard name definition:
mass_concentration_of_diazotrophs_expressed_as_carbon_in_sea_water

'Mass concentration' means mass per unit volume and is used in the construction mass_concentration_of_X_in_Y, where X is a material constituent of Y. A chemical or biological species denoted by X may be described by a single term such as 'nitrogen' or a phrase such as 'nox_expressed_as_nitrogen'.The phrase 'expressed_as' is used in the construction A_expressed_as_B, where B is a chemical constituent of A. It means that the quantity indicated by the standard name is calculated solely with respect to the B contained in A, neglecting all other chemical constituents of A. In ocean modelling, diazotrophs are phytoplankton of the phylum cyanobacteria distinct from other phytoplankton groups in their ability to fix nitrogen gas in addition to nitrate and ammonium. Phytoplankton are autotrophic prokaryotic or eukaryotic organisms that live near the water surface where there is sufficient light to support photosynthesis.

Standard names also exist for the mole concentration of a number of components that make up the total zooplankton population, such as mesozooplankton, microzooplankton andmiscellaneous zooplankton.

Ute
