Dear all,

In reply to Markus email dated of 01/25/2014 (below)

Thecurrent CF definitions for "aerosol" are:
/-"Aerosol" means the suspended liquid or solid particles in air (except
cloud droplets).
- "Ambient aerosol" is aerosol that has taken up ambient water through
hygroscopic growth. The extent of hygroscopic growth depends on the
relative humidity and the composition of the aerosol.//
//- "Dry aerosol" means aerosol without water.
//

/

We could eventually propose to modify as follows:

  * "ambient aerosol" to "aerosol" ; New definition: "Aerosol" means
    the suspended liquid or solid particles in air (except cloud
    droplets). The aerosol takes up ambient water through hygroscopic
    growth. The extent of hygroscopic growth depends on the relative
    humidity and the composition of the aerosol.Unless a specific
    relative humidity is indicated, it refers to the aerosol in the
    ambient air conditions.
  * "dry aerosol" : no change
  * "black_carbon" to "elemental_carbon". Definition: A form of carbon
    that is essentially pure carbon rather than being chemically
    combined with hydrogen and/or oxygen. It can exist either in an
    amorphous or crystalline structure (Shah and Rau, 1990)

but then it would require to indicate that earlier standard names
"black_carbon" and "ambient_aerosol" are unrecommended synonymes ?

>> Definition: "Downward" indicates a vector component which is positive when
>> directed downward. Surface_net_downward_mass_flux_of_ammonia is equal to the
>> difference between the quantities with standard names
>> ?surface_downward_mass_flux_of_ammonia? and ?surface_upward_mass_flux_of_ammonia?.
