[CF-metadata] Warming up old stuff - 4 (emissions)

Dear Martin,

Regarding the emission names, I note the supporting emails from Greg Frost and Steve Smith and I think there is no question that we want to be able to represent these quantities within CF. The only concern is to ensure that the names themselves are unambiguous and consistent with existing syntax wherever possible and that the quantities they represent are clearly defined.

Approximately 250 new names conforming to the following patterns and units are proposed:

where X is the name of a chemical species. (A full listing of all the names proposed is included at the end of this email). The syntax of the names is certainly consistent with a number of existing names such as tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_expressed_as_carbon_due_to_emission_from_fossil_fuel_combustion and surface_upward_mass_flux_of_carbon_dioxide_expressed_as_carbon_due_to_emission_from_grazing.

When the carbon_dioxide emission names were introduced there was some discussion as to whether to use 'tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_X_due_to_emission' or 'surface_upward_mass_flux_of_X_due_to_emission'. The units would be the same in either case (kg m-2 s-1) and the distinction is really one of where the emission takes place. The surface_upward_flux names apply only to emission at the surface itself and are therefore 2D fields. The tendency due_to_emission names refer to emission anywhere in the atmosphere, including the surface, and are 3D fields. Obviously your aviation emissions would be 3D, but is that also true of the others? I am happy to use either form of words in these names, whichever you feel is the most appropriate.

Looking back to the original proposal, http://mailman.cgd.ucar.edu/pipermail/cf-metadata/2011/027071.html, you have provided definitions of the emissions sectors in terms of 2006 IPCC source categories. I have found the following document: http://www.ipcc-nggip.iges.or.jp/public/2006gl/pdf/1_Volume1/V1_8_Ch8_Reporting_Guidance.pdf (section 8.5) which appears to contain the categories to which you refer. Please can you confirm whether this is the best reference to use as I think it will be important to include it in the definitions? Steve has supported your sector definitions and they are clearly in wide use. There have been no other comments regarding the categories.

Many of the chemical species proposed for use with these names are already established in the standard name table. A number of new species are also proposed: alcohols, pentane, hexane_and_higher_alkanes, trimethylbenzene, esters, ethers, chlorinated_hydrocarbons, ketones and organic_acids. You have provided definitions for all of these in your proposal, http://mailman.cgd.ucar.edu/pipermail/cf-metadata/2011/027072.html. Jonathan supported the introduction of the new species and no other comments have been received on this point. I also support the introduction of these species names.

Not all possible combinations of pattern and species are proposed, as some would be quantities that do not occur in the atmosphere. The proposed combinations of pattern (emission sector and species) are sensible and I think there is no objection to the individual names. If you can confirm whether the tendency or surface flux form of the names is most appropriate and also the most appropriate reference for the emissions sector definitions, then I think these names can be accepted and they would then be included in the next update of the standard name table.
