[CF-metadata] repost warming up old stuff - part 4: emissions (hit send too early)

Hi Martin,

I guess you are referring to your emails from
http://mailman.cgd.ucar.edu/pipermail/cf-metadata/2011/027072.html .
I agree that the CF-standard names haven't been updated in quite a while
(since July?).

But it seems like there are still some open issues concerning the
sectors. I think the selection of the IPCC sectors is quite arbitrary
and very much related to greenhouse gases. It seems like the IPCC
sectors have been derived from the UNECE/CLRTAP NFR sectors
(http://www.unece.org/env/documents/2002/eb/ge1/eb.air.ge.1.2002.7.e.pdf
pp 21)which again have been derived from the Corinair/SNAP sectors
combined with the IPCC2000 sectors.

Since CF should not only serve IPCC, I would rather like to see a
general list of human activity sectors, and then request standard-names
for those as a whole. There is even an additional problem with these
sectors: They are very hierarchical, and I would like to see these
hierarchies at one point or another. As Jonathan suggested, I think this
human activity sector list should be handled separately and then
included in the standard_names.

I don't like to use the 'due to' keyword either. This is for processes,
like 'convection', and I don't consider 'emission from energy
production' a process. I'd like a new standard_name extension like
'caused by' better. Otherwise, we might have a physical process and a
human process compete for a standard name, like
xxx_due_to_convection_due_to_emission

I'm not sure about the correct procedure for requesting new standard
names, but shouldn't they appear in 'trac' at one point or another? I
couldn't find a trac-ticket for your request.

Heiko

Here, I provide the list of specific standard_name attributes we would like to see in the list. The old emails detail the concept and explain how these names were derived.

> Group: tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_X_due_to_emission_from_land_transport
> Units: kg m-2 s-1
> Definition: The 'land transport' sector refers to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) source categories 1A3b, 1A3c and 1A3e as defined in the 2006 IPCC guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories. It includes fuel combustion activities related to road transportation (1A3B), railways (1A3c) and other transportation (1A3e).
