Dear all,
I would like to propose new CF standard names for different emission sectors. It was agreed some time ago "that "emission" is a general term that includes sources located anywhere in the atmosphere, such as aircraft, and sources located at the earth's surface." The new gridded emission files which have been prepared for the IPCC AR5 simulations are subdivided into 12 emission sectors (see also Lamarque et al. 2010, www.atmos-chem-phys-discuss.net/10/4963/2010/ and, in more detail,
ftp://ftp-ipcc.fz-juelich.de/pub/emissions/ancillary_data/IPCC_AR5_Emission_Sectors_v02.xls) and we would need specific standard names for them. (The issue was once raised by Martin Schultz - see Alison's mail from May 20 2009 15:06:26 +0100).
I would therefore like to expand the "due_to_<process>" syntax with <process> = emission.
For the moment, I'm proposing the expansion for carbon dioxide, only. Other species will follow.
Here are the CF standard names that I propose for the 12 IPCC AR5 emission sectors:

tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_due_to_emission_from_energy_production_and_distribution kg m-2 s-1
2)
tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_due_to_emission_from_industrial_processes_and_combustion kg m-2 s-1
3)
tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_due_to_emission_from_residential_and_commercial_combustion kg m-2 s-1
4)
tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_due_to_emission_from_solvent_production_and_use kg m-2 s-1
5)
tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_due_to_emission_from_agricultural_production kg m-2 s-1
6)
tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_due_to_emission_from_agricultural_waste_burning kg m-2 s-1
7)
tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_due_to_emission_from_waste_treatment_and_disposal kg m-2 s-1
8)
tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_due_to_emission_from_forest_fires kg m-2 s-1
9)
tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_carbon_dioxide_due_to_emission_from_savanna_and_grassland_fires kg m-2 s-1
