[CF-metadata] Missing standardnames for our our ocean modelMPI-OM

Dear all,

Just to mention that in principle ocean_vertical_diffusivity should be already available within CF standard name table, I remember we discussed on this last Christmas.

Cheers
Olivier

Dear Jonathan,

sorry for the delay. I wanted to discuss your question with our ocean modeller
and couldn't reach him until today. This is his answer:

"As default we use Richardson-Number depended mixing following Pacanowski
and Philander plus an additional wind induced mixing term which decays
exponentially with depth . Both is included in ocean_vertical_diffusivity,
however the wind induced part can be diagnosed separately
(ocean_vertical_diffusivity_due_to_wind)."

Maybe, it would be clearer to use "due_to_wind_mixing" instead
of "due_to_wind". Which one is more precise/understandable?

Agreed, richardson_number_in_sea_water seems to be more consistent.

Thank you for spotting this. And yes, we agree on the unit in the standard
name table.

To sum up our altered proposal:

richardson_number_in_sea_water; 1
ocean_vertical_viscosity; m2 s-1
ocean_vertical_diffusivity; m2 s-1
ocean_vertical_diffusivity_due_to_wind or
            ocean_vertical_diffusivity_due_to_wind_mixing; m2 s-1
water_flux_into_ocean_without_flux_correction; kg m-2 s-1

Can we agree on the names for the two energy tendencies? We haven't discussed
them so far.
4. energy tendencies
tendency_of_potential_energy_content_of_ocean_layer_due_to_diffusion; W m-2
tendency_of_potential_energy_content_of_ocean_layer_due_to_convection; W m-2

Regarding the "where_sea" parameters, we wait for the decision of ticket 17?
5. some "where_sea" parameters
surface_net_downward_radiative_flux_where_sea; W m-2
surface_net_downward_shortwave_flux_where_sea; W m-2
surface_net_downward_longwave_flux_where_sea; W m-2
surface_downward_latent_heat_flux_where_sea; W m-2
surface_downward_sensible_heat_flux_where_sea; W m-2

Best wishes,
Martina
