I agree entirely with Jonathan that it was understood that the standard
name named the field while the CF attributes history or source can be
used to describe how the field had been changed or measured/derived.
With this understanding of the CF standard name this is why we have been
developing the NMM (Numerical Model Metadata) schema
(
http://ncas-cms.nerc.ac.uk/NMM/index.php) which could be used to
describe the source of a field from a numerical model. One could equally
imagine that there could be a sensor metadata schema that describes the
measured source of this same field. The same standard name is used but
the CF source attribute explains their different provenance.
