[CF-metadata] Standard name table updated

Dear All,

The standard name table has been updated. The current version is now Version 55, dated 12 June 2018. The changes have also been published on the NERC Vocabulary Server. All changes are listed at the end of this message.

The next update of the standard name table is planned for 2 July 2018. There are now approximately 50 names that remain to be agreed for CMIP6, plus a small number of new area types. As soon as these are resolved I will begin to address the list of non-CMIP related names that are currently waiting for attention.

3. Modifications to definitions of existing names

a. A definition of 'boundary layer mixing' was agreed during the discussion of names recently added for CMIP6 DynvarMIP: ' "Boundary layer mixing" means turbulent motions that transport heat, water, momentum and chemical constituents within the atmospheric boundary layer and affect exchanges between the surface and the atmosphere. The atmospheric boundary layer is typically characterised by a well-mixed sub-cloud layer of order 500 metres, and by a more extended conditionally unstable layer with boundary-layer clouds up to 2 km. (Reference: IPCC Third Assessment Report, Working Group 1: The Scientific Basis, 7.2.2.3, https://www.ipcc.ch/ipccreports/tar/wg1/273.htm).' This has now been added to the definitions of 8 existing boundary layer names:

The definitions of two existing graupel names were updated to include the recently agreed description: 'Graupel consists of heavily rimed snow particles, often called snow pellets; often indistinguishable from very small soft hail except when the size convention that hail must have a diameter greater than 5 mm is adopted. Reference: American Meteorological Society Glossary http://glossary.ametsoc.org/wiki/Graupel. There are also separate standard names for hail. Standard names for "graupel_and_hail" should be used to describe data produced by models that do not distinguish between hail and graupel.'
