Aliases No new aliases were added in this version of the standard name table. 3. Modifications to definitions of existing names a. Geoid and reference_ellipsoid names During the discussion of new names for trac ticket 143 it was agreed that all names referring to 'geoid' or 'reference_ellipsoid' as the vertical datum should contain the following sentence in their definitions: 'To specify which [geoid | reference ellipsoid] is being used, a grid_mapping variable should be attached to the data variable as described in Chapter 5.6 of the CF Convention.' This addition affects 10 existing names: depth_below_geoid geoid_height_above_reference_ellipsoid height_above_reference_ellipsoid histogram_of_backscattering_ratio_over_height_above_reference_ellipsoid histogram_of_equivalent_reflectivity_factor_over_height_above_reference_ellipsoid ocean_rigid_lid_pressure_expressed_as_sea_surface_height_above_geoid sea_floor_depth_below_geoid sea_surface_height_above_geoid sea_surface_height_above_reference_ellipsoid square_of_sea_surface_height_above_geoid b. Air pressure names During the discussion of new names for trac ticket 143 it was agreed that a definition for 'air_pressure' should be introduced. The definitions of all air_pressure names now contain the following sentence: 'Air pressure is the force per unit area which would be exerted when the moving gas molecules of which the air is composed strike a theoretical surface of any orientation.' This addition affects 17 existing names: air_pressure air_pressure_anomaly air_pressure_at_cloud_base air_pressure_at_cloud_top air_pressure_at_convective_cloud_base air_pressure_at_convective_cloud_top air_pressure_at_freezing_level air_pressure_at_mean_sea_level difference_of_air_pressure_from_model_reference final_air_pressure_of_lifted_parcel lagrangian_tendency_of_air_pressure original_air_pressure_of_lifted_parcel square_of_lagrangian_tendency_of_air_pressure surface_air_pressure tendency_of_air_pressure tendency_of_surface_air_pressure tropopause_air_pressure c. Global average sea level change During the recent discussion of the definition of mean_sea_level, it was agreed to also clarify the definition of global_average_sea_level_change. The definitions of all such names now contain the following sentence: "Because global average sea level change quantifies the change in volume of the world ocean, it is not calculated necessarily by considering local changes in mean sea level." This addition affects 6 existing names: amplitude_of_global_average_sea_level_change global_average_sea_level_change global_average_steric_sea_level_change global_average_thermosteric_sea_level_change phase_of_global_average_sea_level_change tendency_of_global_average_sea_level_change d. Corrections of typographical errors (reported by Rob Thomas when accessing standard names via the NERC Vocabulary Service) As a result of obtaining the list of CF standard names via the NERC Vocabulary Service, Rob Thomas of the Irish Marine Institute reported a number of definitions containing unexpected characters such as non-breaking spaces, smart quotes, degree symbols and em and en dashes of varying lengths. None of these characters affect the meaning of the definitions. They have now been either removed or replaced by appropriate ascii characters. The following 28 names are affected: automated_tropical_cyclone_forecasting_system_storm_identifier downward_air_velocity land_ice_basal_specific_mass_balance_flux atmosphere_absorption_optical_thickness_due_to_sea_salt_ambient_aerosol_particles tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_sea_salt_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission sea_water_mass_per_unit_area_expressed_as_thickness steric_change_in_sea_surface_height thermosteric_change_in_sea_surface_height atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles mass_concentration_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_in_air mass_fraction_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_in_air mass_fraction_of_pm10_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_in_air mass_fraction_of_pm2p5_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_in_air tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_dry_deposition tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission_from_agricultural_waste_burning tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission_from_energy_production_and_distribution tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission_from_forest_fires tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission_from_industrial_processes_and_combustion tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission_from_land_transport tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission_from_maritime_transport tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission_from_residential_and_commercial_combustion tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission_from_savanna_and_grassland_fires tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_emission_from_waste_treatment_and_disposal tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_gravitational_settling tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_turbulent_deposition tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_due_to_wet_deposition tendency_of_mass_concentration_of_elemental_carbon_dry_aerosol_particles_in_air_due_to_emission_from_aviation e. sea_surface temperature In addition to correcting some typographical errors, as described in 3d, the sentence 'The surface called "surface" means the lower boundary of the atmosphere' was removed from three existing sea_surface temperature names, a change that was requested by Craig Donlon in 2016. sea_surface_foundation_temperature sea_surface_skin_temperature sea_surface_subskin_temperature --- ------ Alison Pamment Tel: +44 1235 778065 Centre for Environmental Data Analysis Email: alison.pamment at stfc.ac.uk STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory R25, 2.22 Harwell Campus, Didcot, OX11 0QX, U.K.Received on Thu Jul 27 2017 - 09:31:46 BST
