Dear All,

The standard name table has been updated with the changes listed at the end of this message.

The current version of the table is now 32, dated 5 April 2016. The links on the CF website and list of standard name contributors have been updated accordingly; the standard name changes have also been published on the NERC vocabulary server.

The next update to standard names will take place on 17th May.

Best wishes,
Alison

1. New names

northward_northward_derivative_of_geopotential (canonical units: s-2)
northward_upward_derivative_of_geopotential (canonical units: s-2)
northward_westward_derivative_of_geopotential (canonical units: s-2)
upward_upward_derivative_of_geopotential (canonical units: s-2)
westward_upward_derivative_of_geopotential (canonical units: s-2)
westward_westward_derivative_of_geopotential (canonical units: s-2)
distance_from_geocenter (canonical units: m)
ocean_relative_vorticity (canonical units: s-1)
tendency_of_change_in_land_ice_amount (canonical units: kg m-2 s-1)

2. Modifications to definitions of existing names

The definition of sea_surface_temperature has been updated to correctly cross-reference the more specific sea surface temperature standard names. The definition now reads:
'Sea surface temperature is usually abbreviated as "SST". It is the temperature of sea water near the surface (including the part under sea-ice, if any). More specific terms, namely sea_surface_skin_temperature, sea_surface_subskin_temperature, and surface_termperature are available for the skin, subskin, and interface temperature. respectively. For the temperature of sea water at a particular depth or layer, a data variable of sea_water_temperature with a vertical coordinate axis should be used.'

3. Modifications to units of existing names

The two names heat_flux_into_sea_water_due_to_freezing_of_frazil_ice and surface_downward_heat_flux_in_snow had both been correctly assigned units of W m-2, but a typographical error meant that the whitespace was missing in the specification of the canonical units. This was causing some problems with the CF checker. The error has now been corrected.

No new aliases are included in this update.
