I agree with Alison that height is the word we use in standard names for
the vertical distance above the surface. So I think the standard_name you
need is just "height". That is exactly what it means. If this is to provide
a vertical coordinate for a layer, as Alison says, you would do this with
bounds for the vertical coordinate variable.
