[CF-metadata] String attribute syntax

Dear all

Can string attributes contain blanks or comma characters?
For instance, in case of netCDF files from multiple institutes, can one define "INSTITUTE1, INSTITUTE2, and INSTITUTE3"
as "institute_id"?
