[CF-metadata] general question on delimiters for multi-valued standard CF attributes

Dear All:
  
 The CF standard includes examples for how to apply the CF conventions.
  
 Some multi value standard attributes like "coordinates" are space
delimited.
  
 Some multi-valued standard attributes like flag_values and valid_range are
comma delimited.
  
 Are the use of the comma and space delimiters as identified in the CF
standard considered mandatory ?
  
 For example, can spaces be used as a delimiter for flag_values ?
