[CF-metadata] standard name for ozone partial column in atmosphere layer

Dear Christophe and Philip,

thank you both for your comments. The amended proposal is now:

mole_content_of_ozone_in_atmosphere_layer; mol m-2

' "Content" indicates a quantity per unit area. The "content_of_X_in_atmosphere_layer" refers to the vertical integral between two specified levels in the atmosphere. "Layer" means any layer with upper and lower boundaries that have constant values in some vertical coordinate. There must be a vertical coordinate variable indicating the extent of the layer(s). If the layers are model layers, the vertical coordinate can be model_level_number, but it is recommended to specify a physical coordinate (in a scalar or auxiliary coordinate variable) as well. For the mole content integrated from the surface to the top of the atmosphere, standard names including "atmosphere_mole_content_of_X" are used. The chemical formula for ozone is O3. "mole_content_of_ozone_in_atmosphere_layer" is usually measured in Dobson Units which are equivalent to 446.2 micromoles m-2. N.B. Data variables containing column content of ozone can be given the standard name of either equivalent_thickness_at_stp_of_atmosphere_ozone_content or atm
osphere_mole_content_of_ozone. The latter name is recommended for consistency with mole content names for chemical species other than ozone.'

I think this proposal is in pretty good shape and unlikely to be controversial. Therefore, unless further comments are received within the next seven days the name will be accepted for addition to the standard name table.

The standard name Guidelines http://cf-pcmdi.llnl.gov/documents/cf-standard-names/guidelines don't explicitly cover the different word order for atmosphere and atmosphere_layer, however, I think this case is very like the situation described for surfaces in the 'Qualifications' section of the document. Following the same thinking, a single word qualification such as 'atmosphere' would go at the beginning of the name whereas a multi-word phrase such as 'atmosphere_layer' would go at the end after a connecting word such as 'of' or 'in'. Certainly this is the approach we have taken with all the existing atmosphere and atmosphere_layer names.
