[CF-metadata] CF standard names for emissions

From: Smith, Steven J <ssmith>

To the NetCDF-CF Metadata Working Group,

I would also like to endorse this proposal.

I played an active role in putting together the year 2000 base year inventory (along with Jean-Francois Lamarque, Martin, Claire, and others) used to generate the RCP emissions data now being used by modeling groups worldwide. We used similar definitions as these, and having such standards in place will greatly facilitate future work and help ensure greater consistency between datasets.

Sincerely,

I am a co-chair of the Global Emissions Initiative (GEIA,http://www.geiacenter.org/) and a lead on the Community Initiative for Emissions Research and Applications (CIERA, http://ciera-air.org/). On behalf of GEIA and CIERA, I would like to request that you take up consideration of a proposal put forth by Martin Schultz of FZ Juelich for new CF standard names for emissions (Martin's message is included below).

Emissions inventories are of critical importance to Earth system modeling. To be useful, these complex data sets must be made accessible to the broad community of scientists who need them. Objective evaluation of inventory datasets is also critical, and requires systematic efforts to make use of the wide variety of observational and modeling data that are available on the web.

Martin has been a leader in promoting the interoperability of atmospheric chemistry datasets and designing web systems for these data. His proposal for standard emissions names in netCDF-CF is key to making inventory datasets accessible by existing data portals and usable by online applications. Fully interoperable emissions data are absolutely essential if GEIA and CIERA are to realize their vision of increasing access to and improving emissions information.

I respectfully request that your working group act on Martin's proposal as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Greg Frost

Dear all,
this is my final attempt to propose these new emission standard names. The proposal dates back to June 8th, 2011 and has never been implemented. Here, I provide the list of specific standard_name attributes we would like to see in the list. The old emails detail the concept and explain how these names were derived.
I request addition to the standard_name table within 1 month.
