[CF-metadata] Update to the standard name table 16 June 2009

Dear All,

An update to the standard name table is long overdue. There have been a
large number of proposals for new names in recent months and it is
taking a while to work through them all. I am planning an update of the
table on Tuesday 16 June and as you will see from the list below, there
will be a lot of changes this time. Due to the length of the list, I am
allowing a little longer than the usual seven days for final checks. If
you do spot any errors please let me know as soon as possible. At the
end of this email you will find details of planned changes to the
standard names Guidelines to accompany the changes to the table itself.

Christiane has pointed out that two existing names omit the word 'mass'.

a) dry_deposition names

As a result of the addition of new turbulent_deposition and
gravitational_settling names for the ECHAM-Hammoz model, it has been
agreed that the definition of all dry deposition_names should contain
the following explanatory sentence:
'Dry deposition is the sum of turbulent deposition and gravitational
settling.' Corresponding sentences will be included in the
turbulent_deposition and gravitational_settling name definitions to make
clear the relationships between all these names.

b) sea_water_pressure

No definition currently exists for this name. Following discussion of
the CMIP5 ocean names a definition will be created for this name as
follows:
"'sea_water_pressure' is the pressure that exists in the medium of sea
water. It includes the pressure due to overlying sea water, sea_ice, air
and any other medium that may be present."

N.B. Some of these changes may take a little longer to implement than
the update to the standard name table itself.

a. Arising from the GRIB 2 names thread

The existing 'Chemical Species' section is very out of date. I will add
all the currently agreed species names. The use of the 'expressed_as'
phrase in species names will be explained. In addition, this section
will state the decision we have reached regarding IUPAC names:
> Specifically, it has
> been agreed that IUPAC names should be used where practicable, but it
> is recognised that non-systematic IUPAC approved names, or on occasion
> other common names, will be preferable where these are widely used,
> shorter and unambiguous. Where non-IUPAC chemical names are used in
> standard names the definition of the name should include the IUPAC
> equivalent.

We currently have a section in the Guidelines entitled 'Transformations'
which gives a number of 'template' phrases that can be used within
standard names to describe mathematical quantities, for example,
change_over_time_in_X, derivative_of_X_wrt_Y. Jonathan suggested some
time ago (not on the list) that we could similarly include templates for
the processes associated with the chemical names. I will add a section
entitled 'Chemical phrases' and list in there all the currently agreed
phrases (such as
tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of_X_due_to_emission).

The 'Chemical Species' and 'Chemical Phrases' sections will be turned
into separate documents that will be linked to from the Guidelines, but
which can then also be viewed separately.

b. Arising from the "Medium 'atmosphere'" thread

(i) Position of large-scale and local medium within the standard name.

Following on from the discussion of large-scale and local media (e.g.
'atmosphere' versus 'in_air') and their respective positions within the
standard name, it has been agreed that large-scale medium should always
appear as a prefix and local medium as a postfix. This is consistent
with existing atmosphere/ocean and in_air/in_sea_water standard names
(including the moles_of_X aliases that will be created in this update).

(ii) Agreement has been reached that new 'local media' of
in_cloud_water, in_cloud_liquid_water and in_cloud_ice will be useful
for describing dissolved chemical species.

(iii) Position of 'Transformation' in the standard name.

Although mathematical transformations such as change_over_time_in_X are
an established part of standard names, their position within the
standard name is not currently documented.

The standard name guidelines will therefore be amended in accordance
with points i-iii:

a) In the 'Qualifications' section, change the pattern for constructing
standard names from

[surface] [component] standard_name [at surface] [in medium] [due to
process] [assuming condition]

to

[transformation(s)] [surface] [component] [large-scale medium]
standard_name [at surface] [in local medium] [due to process] [assuming
condition]

b) Add a new section entitled 'Large-scale medium' following the
existing 'Component' section:

Large-scale medium

The medium throughout which a quantity applies: atmosphere, troposphere,
stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, middle_atmosphere, ocean.

c) Alter the title of the existing 'Medium' section to 'Local Medium'
and alter the wording as follows:

Local medium

The local medium or layer within which an intensive quantity applies:
in_air, in_atmosphere_boundary_layer, in_sea_ice, in_sea_water, in_soil,
in_soil_water, in_cloud_water, in_cloud_liquid_water, in_cloud_ice.

d) The sentence "Successive transformations may be applied" at the
beginning of the Transformations section will be extended to read
"Successive transformations may be applied, e.g.
square_of_lagrangian_tendency_of_X, and the transformations are applied
to the data in right to left order."
