[CF-metadata] Gaussian Lat/Lon grids

Dear all

>From Brian and Karl's emails I gather that Gaussian weights must be related to
cell areas apart from some normalisation, but I still don't know what they are
and I can't find it on google! I apologise for my ignorance, but I would be
interested to understand this. Can anyone provide a definition?
