[CF-metadata] RE: agreed standard names

Dear Jonathan,

First of all please let me apologise for not getting back to you and the
rest of the list in a more timely manner.

In reference to the consolidated list you have proposed I [unfortunately]
have some further comments on the following standard names:

Kd - Diffuse Attenuation Coefficient
volume_attenuation_coefficient_of_downwelling_irradiance_in_sea_water:m-1
This is important since Kd is a measure of 'irradiance' attenuation and not
of 'radiation'

CDOM - Colour Dissolved Organic Matter
volume_absorption_coefficient_of_radiation_in_sea_water_due_to_coloured_dissolved_organic_matter:m-1
This is important since it is only the 'coloured' component which we are
interested in.

Lr -
surface[_spectral]_sky_radiance_in_air_reflected_by_sea_water: W m-2 m-1
sr-1
This clarification is important since from your proposed name it seemed that
Lr was a measure of the reflected scattered radiation but Lr is instead a
measure of the reflected sky radiance.

One last question (comment) about units which I am not really sure if it
applies: is the CF policy to use only SI units ? I am asking this since some
quantities are never expressed in SI units. For example:

TSM - Total Suspended Matter: usually expressed in g m-3 and not in kg m-3
concentration_of_suspended_matter_in_sea_water

Lu, Lw and Lr: usually expressed in W m-2 ?m-1 sr-1 and not in W m-2 m-1
sr-1
surface_upwelling_spectral_radiance_in_air:
surface_upwelling_spectral_radiance_in_air_emerging_from_sea_water
surface_spectral_sky_radiance_in_air_reflected_by_sea_water

I am sorry if my late comments will postpone the process , but I do believe
that the changes described above will make the standard names more precise,
correct and effective.
