Dear John

I have to admit I don't understand your proposal. Could you explain it more
explicitly, with some examples of what the coordinate values are and where the
data values are actually located?

My main question is, can the grids you want to include already be described
with the conventions we have in CF? If so, is this proposal for an extra,
higher-level, description of the relationship of grids? Is it really necessary
- can these relationships be deduced by inspecting the coordinates?

> (we uses "coordinate axis" as a generalization of 1D "coordinate
> variable" that can have any number of dimensions).

CF calls this an auxiliary coordinate variable. I think that it is counter-
intuitive to use the word "axis" for a multidimensional variable. To me, an
"axis" is something definitely one-dimensional.

Your standard name and formula terms for the vertical coordinate aren't
standard. Is this a new kind of dimensionless vertical coordinate, or a new
formula terms definition for an existing one?

Thanks. Best wishes

Jonathan
