I agree that would make sense, but it would not be legal in this case because
time(time), now being a coordinate variable in the Unidata sense, has to be
monotonic, which it would not be. Auxiliary coord vars do not have to be
monotonic. An index coord var obviously can be, or it can omitted altogether.

Perhaps this problem is because CDMS does not yet support auxiliary coord vars?
