[CF-metadata] Encoding Errors on variables in CF

Dear all,

Has anyone created or suggested a standard way of encoding errors associated
with a particular variable into CF?

Here at the BADC we are encouraging CF for use with instrument data as well
as gridded datasets. Many such datasets have error flags or error bounds
defined. One possibility is that standard_names could be prefixed with
"error_on_". They would more than likely just be included as separate
variables with a standard or long name that refers to the parameter
associated with the error.

Where there are error flags or single errors associated with larger units of
data (such as one error score for each profile) it might be sensible to
include this information in a comment or scalar variable.

Any thoughts?

Kind regards,
