[CF-metadata] Standard name and area type tables May update

From: Alison Pamment - UKRI STFC <alison.pamment>

Dear All,

The standard name and area type tables have both been updated. The standard name table is now at Version 52 and the area type table is at Version 8, both dated 16 May 2018. The standard name changes have also been published on the NERC Vocabulary Server and the area type changes will be added shortly. The full list of changes is given at the end of this message.

Good progress is being made on publishing the various sets of names needed for CMIP6 but there are more to come. There are also standard names unrelated to CMIP under active discussion. Due to the current high volume of names being processed, I will plan the next update to take place on 29th May.

Best wishes,
Alison

V8 area type changes
One new area type has been added in support of the CMIP6 LUMIP project:
herbaceous_vegetation
'Herbaceous plants are plants with very flexible stems. Their leaves and stems die down to soil level at the end of every growing season. Herbaceous plants can be annual, biennial or perennial.'

2. New aliases
a. Aliases resulting from discussion of limits on integrals for full depth names (Sebastien Villaume's question http://mailman.cgd.ucar.edu/pipermail/cf-metadata/2018/060018.html)
Previously we had two names integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_temperature_in_ocean_layer and ocean_integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_temperature. These had aliases of integral_of_sea_water_temperature_wrt_depth_in_ocean_layer and ocean_integral_of_sea_water_temperature_wrt_depth, respectively. The two existing names and their aliases have now all been turned into aliases of one current name.
integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_temperature_in_ocean_layer -> integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_temperature
ocean_integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_temperature -> integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_temperature
integral_of_sea_water_temperature_wrt_depth_in_ocean_layer -> integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_temperature
ocean_integral_of_sea_water_temperature_wrt_depth -> integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_temperature
b. Aliases resulting from discussion of AerChemMIP volume scattering function name
volume_scattering_coefficient_in_air_due_to_ambient_aerosol_particles -> volume_scattering_coefficient_of_radiative_flux_in_air_due_to_ambient_aerosol_particles
volume_scattering_coefficient_in_air_due_to_dried_aerosol_particles -> volume_scattering_coefficient_of_radiative_flux_in_air_due_to_dried_aerosol_particles
c. Martin Juckes reported a typographical error (an extra '_of_') in one existing name
tendency_of_atmosphere_of_mole_concentration_of_carbon_monoxide_due_to_chemical_destruction -> tendency_of_atmosphere_mole_concentration_of_carbon_monoxide_due_to_chemical_destruction
3. Modifications to definitions of existing names
a. Integral_wrt_depth/height names
Sebastien Villaume asked how to specify the limits of an integral calculated over the full depth of the ocean or atmosphere (http://mailman.cgd.ucar.edu/pipermail/cf-metadata/2018/060018.html). It was agreed to amend the definitions of all integral_wrt_depth|height names to read as follows: 'The phrase "integral_wrt_X_of_Y" means int Y dX. To specify the limits of the integral the data variable should have an axis for X and associated coordinate bounds. If no axis for X is associated with the data variable, or no coordinate bounds are specified, it is assumed that the integral is calculated over the entire vertical extent of the medium, e.g, if the medium is air the integral is assumed to be calculated over the full depth of the atmosphere.' Previously the definitions provided no instructions for the full depth case. This change affects the following 11 names.
integral_wrt_depth_of_product_of_sea_water_density_and_conservative_temperature
integral_wrt_depth_of_product_of_sea_water_density_and_potential_temperature
integral_wrt_depth_of_product_of_sea_water_density_and_salinity
integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_ice_temperature_expressed_as_heat_content
integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_potential_temperature_expressed_as_heat_content
integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_practical_salinity
integral_wrt_depth_of_sea_water_temperature
integral_wrt_depth_of_tendency_of_sea_water_alkalinity_expressed_as_mole_equivalent
integral_wrt_depth_of_tendency_of_sea_water_alkalinity_expressed_as_mole_equivalent_due_to_biological_processes
integral_wrt_height_of_product_of_eastward_wind_and_specific_humidity
integral_wrt_height_of_product_of_northward_wind_and_specific_humidity

b. Martin Juckes requested the addition of a definition for number_of_icebergs_per_unit_area so that software would not return an empty string or 'No help available'. A brief definition was added: 'The number of icebergs per unit area.'
c. Sebastien Villaume requested that the definitions of three existing ocean mixed layer names be modified to include references to coordinate variables. Standard names for the coordinate variables themselves were also added in this update (see 1c above).
ocean_mixed_layer_thickness_defined_by_sigma_t
'The ocean mixed layer is the upper part of the ocean, regarded as being well-mixed. The base of the mixed layer defined by temperature, sigma or sigma_theta is the level at which the quantity indicated differs from its surface value by a certain amount. A coordinate variable or scalar coordinate variable with standard name sea_water_sigma_t_difference can be used to specify the sigma_t criterion that determines the layer thickness.'
ocean_mixed_layer_thickness_defined_by_sigma_theta

d. A typographical error was corrected in the definition of soil_pool.
e. The definition of volume_scattering_function_of_radiative_flux_in_sea_water was updated to be consistent with that of the new AerChemMIP name volume_scattering_function_of_radiative_flux_in_air_due_to_ambient_aerosol_particles. The definition now reads:
'Radiative flux is the sum of shortwave and longwave radiative fluxes. Scattering of radiation is its deflection from its incident path without loss of energy. The volume scattering function is the intensity (flux per unit solid angle) of scattered radiation per unit length of scattering medium, normalised by the incident radiation flux. The (range of) direction(s) of scattering can be specified by a coordinate of scattering_angle. A coordinate variable of radiation_wavelength or radiation_frequency can be specified to indicate that the scattering applies at specific wavelengths or frequencies.'
