[CF-metadata] VolMIP Data Request: CF Standard Names

there are 7 variables for VolMIP which require new standard names, as proposed below.


The new names are all associated with volcanic aerosols in the atmosphere ... following existing patterns of usage we refer to them as "volcanic_ambient_aerosol_particles" (cf. "dust_ambient_aerosol_particles").

There are 3 names referring to volcanic ash in air: in order to make the distinction clear we need a short piece of help text: "Volcanic aerosols include both volcanic ash and secondary products such as sulphate aerosols formed from gaseous emissions of volcanic eruptions."

1. od550volso4: Aerosol optical depth at 550 nm due to stratospheric volcanic aerosols [W m-2]
stratosphere_optical_thickness_due_to_volcanic_ambient_aerosol_particles

This name is analogous to the existing standard name atmosphere_optical_thickness_due_to_ambient_aerosol_particles.

2. lwsffluxaero: Longwave flux due to volcanic aerosols at the surface [W m-2]
surface_downwelling_longwave_flux_in_air_due_to_volcanic_ambient_aerosol_particles

As surface_downwelling_longwave_flux_in_air, but only component attributed to volcanic aerosols. (cf. existing CMIP variable rlds).

3. lwtoafluxaerocs: Longwave flux due to volcanic aerosols at TOA under clear sky [W m-2]

toa_outgoing_longwave_flux_due_to_volcanic_ambient_aerosol_particles_assuming_clear_sky

4. swsffluxaero: Shortwave heating rate due to volcanic aerosols [W m-2]
surface_downwelling_longwave_flux_in_air_due_to_volcanic_ambient_aerosol_particles

Analogous to lwsffluxaero above

5. swtoafluxaerocs: Shortwave flux due to volcanic aerosols at TOA under clear sky [W m-2]
toa_outgoing_shortwave_flux_due_to_volcanic_ambient_aerosol_particles_assuming_clear_sky

6. zmlwaero: Zonal mean longwave heating rate due to volcanic aerosols [W m-2]
tendency_of_air_temperature_due_to_shortwave_heating_from_volcanic_ambient_aerosol_particles

Comparable to tendency_of_air_temperature_due_to_shortwave_heating_assuming_clear_sky

7. zmswaero: Zonal mean shortwave heating rate due to volcanic aerosols [W m-2]
tendency_of_air_temperature_due_to_longwave_heating_from_volcanic_ambient_aerosol_particles
