As part of the CMIP6 OMIP data request, I would like to request the new standard name
square_of_sea_surface_salinity (units: 0.001^2)
Sea surface salinity is usually abbreviated as "SSS". It is the salinity of sea water near the surface (including the part under sea-ice, if any), and not the skin salinity (as obtained by satellite retrievals). For the salinity of sea water at a particular depth or layer, a data variable of sea_water_salinity with a vertical coordinate axis should be used. "square_of_X" means X*X.
This new quantity is the direct salinity counterpart to the existing square_of_sea_surface_temperature.
This should complete all standard names required for the OMIP physics data request (
