[CF-metadata] New standard name for geostrophic ocean velocities

I'm sorry to rush you, but wave products will soon be officialy launched in Copernicus Marine Service and we are expecting those standard names to be published prior.

Thank you for reminding me about the two geostrophic names. I agree that these two are pretty straight forward. At Nan's suggestion, I've expanded slightly on our standard definition text of "geostrophic", bearing in mind that it applies equally to ocean and atmosphere circulation.



So now we have:



geostrophic_eastward_sea_water_velocity (canonical units: m s-1)

'A velocity is a vector quantity. "Eastward" indicates a vector component which is positive when directed eastward (negative westward). "Geostrophic" indicates that geostrophic balance is assumed, i.e. that the pressure gradient force and the Coriolis force are balanced and the large scale fluid flow is parallel to the isobars.'



geostrophic_northward_sea_water_velocity (canonical units: m s-1)

'A velocity is a vector quantity. "Northward" indicates a vector component which is positive when directed northward (negative southward). These two names are accepted for inclusion in the standard name table and will be added in the February update.



There are ten existing "geostrophic" names:

surface_geostrophic_eastward_sea_water_velocity_assuming_sea_level_for_geoid

surface_geostrophic_northward_sea_water_velocity

surface_geostrophic_sea_water_x_velocity

surface_geostrophic_sea_water_x_velocity_assuming_sea_level_for_geoid

surface_geostrophic_sea_water_y_velocity

surface_geostrophic_sea_water_y_velocity_assuming_sea_level_for_geoid

The definitions of these names will be updated for consistency with the new text - indeed the wind name definitions don't currently explain geostrophic at all. These changes will also be part of the February update to standard names.

There have been quite a few updates of the tables since, but those names

are not included yet. Is there anything I could/should do to get them

included?



In April, there were also discussions on the inclusion of wave standard

names. The height parameters have been included in table v35 in July.

But the others (mostly period and direction) are still "under

discussion" on the "CF proposal page". Any news on that topic?

The standard name and area type tables have both been updated. The

standard name table is now at version 40 and the area type table is at version

5, both dated 25 January 2017. The changes to both tables have also been

published in the NERC Vocabulary Server.

The changes are listed below. I have also given details of the changes that

went into the standard name table at version 39, published in December 2016,

as I did not send those to the mailing list at the time.

Mike Godin, David Lawrence, Sophie Nowicki and Elena Shevliakova have

been added to the list of contributors to CF standard names:
