Do you mean that the ensemble had an initial size of N, but that the ensemble
dimension has since been reduced to M, where 1<=M<=N, by discarding some of
the members? I wonder if anyone else has a use case like this.

I agree that this is not the same as collapsing the dimension to M=1 using a
cell_method, which is what I had thought you meant.
