The definitions of the phase and amplitude names both contain the sentence "A coordinate variable of harmonic_period can be used to specify the period of the sinusoidal wave" although this could easily be strengthened to say "should be used to specify". Olivier's original proposals (
http://mailman.cgd.ucar.edu/pipermail/cf-metadata/2012/033559.html) contained separate entries for annual phase, semiannual phase, annual amplitude and semiannual amplitude. During the discussion it was decided that the period of oscillation would be better separated out into a coordinate variable rather than introducing multiple new standard names for concepts that are essentially the same quantity except for the period. I can make the small change to the definitions at the next update, if Olivier agrees.
