My comment referred to units. If quantity X has units involving
per m2 but does not say "per_unit_area" in its name, and then quantity Y
is proposed which is a similar thing to X but is per m3 and it is proposed
to include "per_unit_volume" in its name, it may be helpful to rename X
as X_per_unit_area, of which the original X will be an alias.

The unit being per m2 doesn't imply it's an area-mean. It could still be
a spot measurement like e.g. radiative fluxes in W m-2.
