Thanks for the two comments. Here are my replies:
a) I agree that the word 'should' needs to be used. I will update the
two definitions, accordingly.
b) It looks like there has been a reply from Jonathan Gregory which will
hopefully answer this question. "_from_the_surface" means that a parcel
of air begins at the surface, i.e. bottom of the atmosphere and is then
lifted along adiabats up to the final pressure height. It is not the
air temperature at some specific pressure height above the surface. For
that scenario, the other standard name will be used.
