[CF-metadata] CF-compliant file suffix - .nc?

In the following "CF Conformance Requirements and Recommendations" document, it states that a file must have a .nc suffix.

Is this correct? If so, are there any current plans to change this to incorporate other file formats, e.g. HDF5?
