[CF-metadata] sea_surface_wave_mean_period

Dear Jonathan,

The existing wave period terms could be considered different geophysical quantities (they're periods pertaining to specific parts of the wave energy spectrum) and I would advise against using them in Jeff's case. I therefore support his suggestion at add sea_surface_wave_mean_period to the list of Standard Names.

The only mapping that causes me to wonder a little is Mean Wave Direction at Peak Period = sea_surface_wave_to_direction, which implies that the CF term refers to the energetically dominant waves. I think this is OK, but opinions of any specialists out there would be welcomed.

I would say Yes. Standard names are provided with different degrees of
generality for different purposes. If you think that all the data to which
you would give that standard name are the same geophysical quantity, and
it is valid to compare them, even if the methods are different for deriving
them, then it is correct to give them the same standard name.
