Dear Heinke

On grounds of intelligibility, I tend to think atmosphere_number_content_of_X
would be better. It would also be consistent with atmosphere_mass_content_of_X.

> total_aerosol_ambient_absorption_optical_depth_at_550_nm

I think that the 550 nm should not be in the standard name. We don't have
numerical parameters in existing names because they can be put instead in
coordinate variables or scalar coordinate variables. In this case you could
have a (scalar) coord var of radiation_wavelength to specify 550 nm.

Existing names have optical_thickness, not optical_depth. We have various
names already in the table for optical thickness due to aerosol.

What is the significance of "total" in this proposed name?

> _due_to_sedimentation

You define this as meaning deposition by gravitational settling. I would
suggest that _due_to_gravitational_settling is a more understandable phrase.

Best wishes
