I had hoped there was a commonly sgreed-upon way to do this kind of interpolation. The HDF-EOS documentation just breezes past it, claiming this kind of mapping "works quite well" without going into details like how you would actually *use* it.

Dear Bob

CF recommends coordinates are stored for all points in the auxiliary coordinate
variables precisely so that the data user doesn't have to understand how to
work out the coordinates. That way, fewer people's heads will hurt - though it
doesn't help you!
