The GOES-R system generates fire, aerosol, rainfall rate/quantity, and volcanic ash products. These products include summary (aggregate) statistics (min, max, mean, and std deviation) whose formal CDL/NcML specifications make use of the CF "cell_methods" attribute. These statistics are associated with areas where the following environment conditions apply:

(!) fire (2) smoke (3) dust (4) volcanic_ash (5) raining

The cell_methods attribute associated with these statistics could benefit by using the existing "where" clause that reference of the five environment conditions listed above.

As a result, we would like fire, smoke, dust, volcanic_ash, and raining to the area_type table.

Dear Randy

Although there's no harm in having a trac ticket, I think we would regard the area_type table as part of the vocabulary of standard names and so changes to it can be agreed on the email list, without the more demanding rules of trac tickets.

I think the principle of your proposal is fine. I think it is necessary to define what fire, smoke, etc. mean, and indicate how it is decided whether they occur.

Whereas fire and smoke are definitely airborne, dust and volcanic ash might be misunderstood as referring to the nature of the surface, so perhaps more explicit phrases might be useful to indicate they are airborne? I note there are standard names containing the phrase dust_dry_aerosol - would this phrase, or perhaps dust_aerosol, be appropriate? I note that raining is a process, whereas all other area types are materials. You could say rain, I suppose.
