#73 accepted defect

Rename Appendix G as Appendix Z

Description

Appendix G is the revision history of the CF standard document. When first added it was at the end of the document, which is a convenient place for it, but in CF 1.6 there is an Appendix H following it. For future convenience, I propose that Appendix G should be renamed Appendix Z in the next release, so that it returns to the end of the document and stays there forever.

Replying to jonathan: This sounds reasonably pragmatic to me.

Have gotten out of synch here, I think. See emails 1/2/2012. Sorry for not getting this into trac:

Subject: Re: [CF Metadata] #73: Rename Appendix G as Appendix Z Date: Mon, 02 Jan 2012 08:37:20 -0800 From: Jeffrey F. Painter <painter1@…> To: Steve Hankin <steven.c.hankin@…> CC: Jonathan Gregory <j.m.gregory@…>

The present DocBook? setup makes Steve's suggestion easy to implement - the revision history would be done the same way as the bibliography.

Hi Jonathan, Jeffrey,

I agree that the revision history belongs at the end.

Is there a reasonable editorial approach to this in which we simple exclude it from the numbering of appendices. For example suppose it was simply called "Revision History" in the Table of Contents -- a special section?

The down side to naming it Appendix Z is that we substitute one editorial problem for another -- we have the appearance of a block of missing appendices between G and Y.

It doesn't look like a concensus was reached on whether the section should be called "Appendix Z: Revision History" or just "Revision History"? From a technical point of view the latter looks easier.

Also, should "Appendix H: Annotated Examples of Discrete Geometries" be renamed to "Appendix G: ..."? If not we will probably need a place-holder appendix G (with appropriate wording).

... the end of the document ...

On face value that would place it after the bibliography. But renaming as "Appendix Z" suggests it should go before the bibliography. What is intended?

I've prepared https://github.com/cf-convention/cf-conventions/pull/68 on the basis of:

  • "Revision History"
  • Use a place-holder.
  • Positioned before the bibliography.

That's fine, thank you, and indeed better than making it an ordinary appendix. The defect to be corrected was that the history should not be lost in the midst of other appendices. Jonathan
